How anagram solving works
An anagram is a word formed by rearranging all the letters of another word or phrase. This tool treats your input as a bag of letters rather than a fixed order, then checks every word in a 370,000-word dictionary to see which ones can be built from that bag.
Choose "Exact anagram" when you need to use every single letter you typed — the classic definition of an anagram. Choose "Any length" when you just want to know what words can be made from some of your letters, which is closer to how a Scrabble or word-jumble solver works.
When to use an anagram solver
- Cryptic crossword clues that include an anagram indicator (words like "mixed," "confused," "broken," or "rearranged").
- Scrabble or Words with Friends, when you want to see every playable word from your current tiles.
- Daily word-jumble puzzles printed in newspapers, where a set of scrambled letters spells a themed answer.
- Vocabulary building — anagram practice is a well-known way to sharpen spelling and pattern recognition.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between "exact" and "any length" matching?
Exact anagram mode only returns words that use every letter you entered, with none left over — the traditional definition of an anagram. Any-length mode returns words that can be built using some or all of your letters, which is more useful for games like Scrabble where you don't have to play your entire rack at once.
Can I include blank or wildcard tiles?
Yes. Add a question mark (?) for each blank tile you have. A wildcard can stand in for any single letter when the solver checks whether a word can be formed.
Does this work for cryptic crossword anagram clues?
Yes — once you've identified the anagram indicator and the letters to rearrange within the clue, type just those letters in here to see the possible answers, then cross-check against the clue's definition and the checked letters from crossing answers.
